Christ Must Remain the Focus
One danger in discussing spiritual warfare is allowing too much attention to be placed on Satan, demons, or darkness.
The focus of Christian ministry must remain Jesus Christ.
Jesus instructed His disciples not to base their joy upon spiritual authority itself. When they returned amazed that demons submitted to them, Jesus redirected their attention:
“Do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”
— Luke 10:20
Our confidence is not in how much we understand about darkness. Our confidence is in Jesus.
He is the One who has overcome the world, defeated the powers of darkness, broken the power of sin, and given His people authority to stand firm in Him. We do not magnify the enemy by making him the center of our attention. We magnify Christ by recognizing that every power and authority is ultimately subject to Him.
Spiritual warfare should therefore draw us closer to Jesus, not deeper into fear, fascination, or preoccupation with evil. The goal is not to become experts in darkness. The goal is to know Christ, recognize His voice, walk in His truth, remain submitted to His authority, and depend upon the Holy Spirit.
The more clearly we understand who Jesus is, the more clearly we understand who we are in Him. Our authority is not independent authority. It is authority exercised under the lordship of Jesus Christ, in agreement with His Word, and in dependence upon His Spirit.
Spiritual warfare and deliverance ministry must therefore remain:
- Christ-centered.
- Scripture-grounded.
- Holy Spirit-led.
- Rooted in prayer.
- Practiced in humility.
- Motivated by love.
- Governed by truth.
- Focused on freedom, healing, and restoration.
Deliverance is not the whole of spiritual warfare, and spiritual warfare is not the whole of Christian ministry. It is one part of the greater work Christ has entrusted to His Church: proclaiming the Gospel, making disciples, healing the brokenhearted, caring for people, resisting evil, restoring what has been broken, and helping those in bondage walk into the freedom Jesus Christ has provided.
True freedom is not simply the absence of spiritual oppression. It is a life increasingly surrendered to Christ, renewed by His truth, strengthened by His Spirit, and transformed through relationship with Him.
Ultimately, the purpose is not simply to remove darkness.
The purpose is to help people come more fully under the lordship, truth, love, healing, and freedom of Jesus Christ, so they can walk in the life He intended for them.
